This is Memphis recently arrived from an awful shelter in Crete after being rescued with his sister Belle. He arrived safe and is now adjusting to life in foster in the UK. He is very affectionate and loves a cuddle.

Memphis is vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered.

Memphis was a little shy at first but adapted so well and is a lovely sweet natured boy. Sociable and happy and even clean indoors straight away.

Although Memphis has spent a little time in foster, he is still in need of continued training. So his new family will need to be prepared for the consistent work of introducing a pup to domestic life in the UK - basic training, walking on and off lead, getting used to noises and living in a home.

The decision to adopt a young dog should not be taken lightly - we have had dogs returned as people have not been fully prepared for the hard work that can come. If you invest time and energy into the advice we give you, Memphis will adapt and become well a rounded dogs. But please do not underestimate this can mean a few weeks of consistent work.

Our foster home has provided the feedback below:
Dog’s name: Memphis

Arrival date:  13th January 2023

Where does Memphis sleep at night?
Downstairs in his bed behind a baby gate with my dog the other side of the gate.  He is quiet and clean all night until I wake him in the morning.

How is Memphis with current pets?
Very good on the whole.  He gets on fine with my (slightly grumpy) dog.  They eat together and walk together fine.  He is a little bit playful with the cats, but there’s no malice, and he is learning to leave them alone.  As things currently stand, I wouldn’t recommend he is homed with cats unless they are particularly confident and not bothered by dogs.

Is Memphis clean indoors?
He is perfectly clean indoors, not one accident to-date.  The only thing is when I come downstairs in the morning he is so excited to see me a bit of wee comes out!   I have to stay very calm, so as not to excite him, and let him into the garden straight away.   This is quite common with puppies at first.

Can Memphis be left alone?
Yes.  I have left him alone in the house for an hour each day and watched him on the camera.  He settles himself down after a few minutes and is good as gold.

Is Memphis out on walks?
He loves going for a walk.  He took to his lead straight away with no problems at all.  He was very good and quiet when we met people and dogs on the walk.  He has greeted quiet dogs nicely, and stays back and quiet when more rowdy dogs appear.  He has been happy to have a quick stroke from strangers.

How does Memphis walk on the lead?
He walks well on the lead.  He needs a bit of training to stay to heel, but no real issues.

Has Memphis met other dogs?
He is a little reserved when meeting other dogs, but happy to sit and be quiet while I talked to their people.

How is Memphis with humans?

He was initially shy.  That lasted about an hour.  As soon as he worked out we were providing food and cuddles he settled straight in and even started playing with toys. He is already quite attached to me and my husband and likes to stay within easy reach.

We do not have children and so he has not been tested with them.  However, I would expect him to be absolutely fine with them as long as they are not too noisy.

Have you noticed if Memphis is afraid of any particular things?
No.   Fine with cars passing on our walk.  Fine with the hoover.
He has not demonstrated a fear of anything.

Any other useful information?
Memphis is slightly shy of new people and dogs at first.  He is quite submissive and backs down (on the floor with his feet in the air!) when nervous.  However, he is very quick to realise when he is around kind people and showers them with affection.

I have been taking him on three shorter walks each day, and in between those times he is very happy to curl up next to me so that I can work.

To prevent any separation anxiety issues I have been leaving him alone in the house for an hour each day, and I think this should be gradually increased as necessary.  He also sleeps alone downstairs to get him used to having time by himself.  He has been brilliant with this.

He eats Forthglade complete food.  He loves his food.

He is happy to have a good rub down with a towel and his paws wiped when he comes in from the garden.

He is very affectionate and loves a cuddle on the sofa.  He also likes to play with toys.

We are working on recall at the moment, and he is showing great progress.  He also knows “sit” and “bed”.  He is so eager to please, he is very trainable, and naturally well behaved.

Memphis’ ideal home:
He would make a great companion for a family or couple.  He will be fine with another well mannered dog.  I think he would also be very happy as an only dog.

As he is a little shy, a home that can be quiet while he settles in, would be best.

He asks for very little: good food, walkies and cuddles.  He will give you complete devotion back.
