Live Kind
by Jennifer Avila - Founder & Director

Founding Chimney Farm International Dog Rescue grew out of my love for animals. Although the charity concentrates on rescuing dogs in need in the UK and internationally, we have also helped cats, donkeys, wildlife. I believe that all animals deserve our protection and care.
Whether it’s pets, strays or farmed animals – why should one animal be protected better than another?
We are so lucky to live in the UK where the majority of people are animal lovers. In more distant places animals are exploited, they are seen mostly as a means of making money, using them as a source of food, fur and medicine, or as circus animals and to give tourists a ride. Even close to home we see animal farming practices which show little concern for animal welfare.
We can no longer dismiss climate change as a theory. It’s a fact and is coming increasingly quickly.
Pollution and waste levels have never been higher than now. The planet’s population continues to grow and this means even more food is needed more waste will be generated. The planet cannot continue to sustain man.
Each of us has to make some changes to our lifestyle in order to reduce our waste and give the planet time to try and heal. Specialists are not sure it can recover fully, but with drastic help we can hope to at least prevent more animal species becoming extinct, more waste, more pollution.
I have been vegetarian since the age of 12 years, vegan since 2017, I do not use cosmetics tested on animals, I do not wear anything made form animal products. Its easy living cruelty free. Why not try it, make small changes initially you will adjust. Products from Superdrug are cruelty free and less expensive than named brands, kind.co make incredible vegan cheeses. Bosh have some super recipes. I have some of my own recipes, Macaroni cheese, cheesy broccoli soup, Lentil cottage pie. I am always happy to share any recipes/tips, feel free to email me directly jenn@chimneyfarm.com
As individuals we have to try – but how can we help our planet?

Plant based eating Not only are the practices of animal rearing often unacceptable, but did you know one of the main pollutants of the atmosphere is animal farming? It is responsible for a very high percent of greenhouse gas emissions, more than the combined exhaust from all transportation - all so animals can be farmed for us humans to eat.
Moving towards a plant based diet is one way to reduce such emissions. We can be better, stronger more ethical humans by reducing our meat and dairy intake. This isn’t just about animal welfare, this is about changing the way we feel about eating, the myths and truths. I appreciate that taste often wins over the facts behind meat, but I would ask you to do a little research by taking a little time to watch a few documentaries. If the demand is not there then less animals and land will be farmed, meaning less gases.
Here are a couple of documentaries which will provide an insight. Neither is graphic but both are very interesting.

Eating options are so varied now for a plant based diet. Yes, they may be a little more expensive but eating fresh need not be expensive. You’ll find a wealth of recipes on-line.

Buy and support organic farming
Our soil is suffering and we need to help it recover from all the plastics and chemicals we’ve inflicted on it. Otherwise in 50 years or less there will be no viable way to grow crops.

Create less waste
Did you know Christmas wrapping paper cannot be recycled? Neither can black plastic.
If we were all to use recyclable paper this Christmas what a great help that would be. Brown recycled paper, re use newspapers, amazon packaging, old wrapping and recycle again next year. What an impact that would have.
Why not do a few small changes, do not buy black plastic, re-use your carrier bags or buy eco-friendly, reusable bags. Bamboo products are readily available and so many items, toothbrushes toothpicks, cups. Why not give them a try.
This year I will be wrapping all presents in brown paper or reusing old paper. I am keeping all my empty toilet rolls and making my own Christmas crackers, without useless plastic toys that we just throw away.
Let’s save water - no need to run the tap whilst brushing your teeth, or have so many baths when showers reduce water consumption. They say we should spend 2 minutes brushing our teeth, that’s potentially 2 minutes of wasted running water.
Please be more aware of the water we use, it’s precious and some experts say that in the future wars will be fought over water not oil. We will run out if we continue the level of consumption.
So many little things we can implement now that will just mean small changes, but big results for the planet.
If everyone does something, together we can make a difference.
Animal extinction is increasing each year

Use cruelty free products - it is easy and less expensive
Using animals for cosmetic testing entails some awful forms of animal suffering. There are so many readily available products which are not tested on animals - hair products, shower gel, deodorants, perfumes, toothpastes, so many options and always much cheaper than named brands. We can now find everything we need with a cruelty free option, we now have choice.
Please check your products and consider swapping. I mainly purchase deodorant, toothpaste, sun cream, nail varnish remover and moisturiser from Superdrug. Perfumes from Marks and Spencers or Eden which replicate named brand perfumes for half the price and without the cruelty.

I try and use zero waste shops, which let you use your own plastic bottles and refill on cruelty free products. Or even better try not to use items of plastic and try shampoo and soap bars.

Let’s be better humans and get our relationship back with nature. If we do not, what chance do future generations have? Imagine the world for them, no animals, no soil, extreme weathers.
