We had hoped Lilly would have left Athens sooner but there was an issue trying to get her legal travel papers. The department were concerned because the owner was such a horrid man and they wanted to be sure Lilly wasn’t being sent to worse horrors. The ladies in Athens, especially Sissy who originally found Lilly, have worked tirelessly to prove good intentions and that papers were granted.
When Lilly was first found we were in Athens and immediately asked Barbara at the sanctuary if she would help us. Without a single question Barbara agreed, just truly wonderful, and has never asked for a thing.
We have sent your wonderful donations to Barbra who will pay the transport and use the funds to get a farrier and full check up of Lilly, any funds left over will be put towards Lilly’s care.
Donkeys have a special place in our hearts as endure such hard lives as working animals and in extreme temperatures, loaded to the hilt, carrying tourists up and down mountains. These wonderful intelligent animals need better welfare, companions and happy lives.
We are happy to have been part of Lilly’s rescue story, thank you to everyone who contributed as together we helped to change her life.

How it all started
On a recent trip to Athens, one of the Greek ladies at the shelter found a donkey wandering in the road. It had many scars and damage to her skin and body, clearly the result of years of abuse and neglect. We hid her away at the shelter in the hope she did not have an owner. We named her Lilly
It turned out the owner is a gypsy who had been searching for her. He is a horrible man who trades in horses and donkeys. He buys donkeys and horses who are old or ill and he sells them as meat to zoos and other horrible ends. Poor Lilly, her fate was to be killed and eaten.
The ladies in Athens fought hard for Lilly and have done things the right way with the police. After some haggling and paying the horrible man to sign her over to them, Lilly was finally safe from ever having to return to her old cruel life again.
So what to do with a donkey at a dog shelter?
Luckily Barbara and Fanis from Crete answered our prayers by agreeing to take care of Lilly for us in Crete. They run Agia Marina Donkey Sanctuary and are wonderful people who love and take care of many donkeys and other animals. It’s a paradise for the donkeys and Lilly has been given her place in the family. Where she will have donkey friends and the best care.
