Poor Sabiha was a stray in Athens, we do not know why or for how long, she joined a pack close to the shelter we've helped where these dogs hanged out all the time. We had seen this pack many times from all our visits, the dogs kept themselves safe and were feed by locals, as we did each time we saw them.
Sadly Sabiha was unneutered so it was only a matter of time before she got pregnant, when the shelter workers spotted that she was now expecting babies they decided to catch her as giving birth to puppies in such harsh conditions would not have been good for her or them. She was taken to a vet where the pups were removed and she was neutered.
Very sad for her, but with so many unwanted dogs and strays in Greece this was the only option unfortunately. When we visited the shelter last month we found poor Sabiha in a metal prison cage with nothing but concrete floor, she was completely shut down, like she had given up which was heart breaking to see. The decision was made that we could not leave her to this permanent fate as the shelter workers were refusing to release her back to her pack, so she was prepped for travel and has now joined us, in foster in Aldershot.
When she first arrived this poor girl was so bewildered, it took 24 hours for her to move, but with the loving care of her foster family she has blossomed into a happy girlie and it is special to see as this would never have happened had we left her to stay in that metal prison cell at the shelter.
Sabiha is fully grown -medium sized girl, neutered, sweet natured, sociable with other dogs. Not tested with cats. Mix breed. With a move from her foster home she is likely to take a step back while she adjusts to her new life but it is clear to see that she has it in her to bounce back as she realises that life will be good. She will need a home that understands this will happen and help her over the settling in phase, she could live with or without another dog in the home, she is currently living with two.
Sabiha unfortunately has Leishmania, it is a Mediterranean disease which is not curable but not contagious in the UK, can be managed and likely she wont need any medication, just to be aware in later life. We would love to find her a family who can understand the disease and give her the life she so deserves.
If you are considering giving Sabhia a loving home but would like to discuss leishmania in more detail, please complete an adoption enquiry form and we can answer any questions you have regarding this.
Below is what foster mum, Justine says about Sabhia;
Where does Sabiha sleep at night?
Wherever she likes. She is happy to be downstairs on her own cuddled on the sofa or upstairs in our bedroom in her bed.
How is Sabiha with current pets?
At first she was very shy but now she is comfortable living with two dogs. Tries to have a little play with them now and again. It did take a few days for her to get used to them.
Is Sabiha clean indoors?
Completely clean. We have had no accidents at all since we have had her. She will take herself outside to do her business. She is quite shy and likes to do it when no one is around.
Can Sabiha be left alone?
Yes - she has been left alone a few times for 1-2 hours and is not bothered at all. She will curl up on the sofa and sleep.
Is Sabiha out on walks?
Yes, she adores her walks and chats to us now, she is so happy to be out. Her tail is wagging and she has now even been off the lead and is a good girl.
How does Sabiha walk on the lead?
When she wants to walk she is very good - no pulling. Loves to have a good sniff. Not scared of cars or traffic. Now off lead and behaves brilliantly.
How is Sabiha with other dogs?
Lives with two dogs in foster. Met some on walks. Doesn't take any notice when walking by but if they get too close she is wary of them.
How is Sabiha with humans?
Very affectionate. Loves cuddles on the sofa. She likes to see what I am doing if I am not in sight.
Have you noticed if Sabiha is afraid of any particular things?
Nothing in particular.. fine with the hoover, TV etc. Sabiha is just a generally shy dog but every day she is getting more confident and it's great to see her coming out of her shell.
Any other useful information ?
Sabiha is such a funny little character in the house. She isn't very barky at all but loves a little chat. She loves to sleep, loves her food and she has just started playing with toys. Sabiha is a very gentle and affectionate dog and will make a lovely pet.
