Name: Lady Penelope
Age: 6 years neutered
Location: In foster in Surrey
Live with children: Children 5 years+
Live with dogs: Yes
Live with cats: No
Meet Lady Penelope (Penny). We have rescued her directly from a greyhound racing kennels. As much as we disapprove of racing animals for money we want to be able to help the dogs that have been lucky enough to retire.
Greyhounds are retired by about 4yrs old if they don’t get injuries beforehand. Some as young as 2yrs. What happens to all these retired young dogs? Are they put to sleep? Sent to China for their dog meat trade? Sent to rescue kennels where the less pretty ones stay for their entire lives? Greyhounds can live to 12yrs plus.
They are the most gentle pets, they love a fuss. They’re generally good with other dogs as they spend their life around them. Penny is good with her foster mums two dogs. They do have a cat but he is very dog like. Penny is keen on the cat but Max stands his ground, We would not rehome her with a cat.
Penny is 6yrs old. She has had a sad life so far, she started racing, then was retired around 4 years old, she went to live in a home but was returned to the racing kennels after 2 years. Her adoptive family were an elderly couple who no longer wanted a dog.
How miserable for her to taste freedom and a nice warm bed. Only to find herself back in a damp cold kennel with no bed just straw to sleep on.
Penny is a very easy girl, not needy, quiet, clean, just adorable.
Let’s make sure her remaining years are full of love and security.
Below is what her foster mum says about her.
Dogs name: Penny (Lady Penelope)
Where does Lady Penelope sleep at night?
Downstairs on the Sofa. She likes to sleep off the ground. Maybe because in kennels they have a raised straw trough.
She likes to lay stretched out too!
How is Lady Penelope with current dogs/animals?
She’s great with my 2 spaniels. She seems to ignore them. She’s ok withmy big fat cat too but he’s bold and doesn’t run. Wouldn’t trust her with small furries. (She’s been chasing them for a living for 4 years)
Is Lady Penelope clean indoors?
Yes she will stand at the door to go out.
Can Lady Penelope be left alone?
Yes she’s been left for up to 2 hours.
Is Lady Penelope out on walks?
Yes, she loves to go out. Not fussed about a long walk but happy to join in.
How does Lady Penelope walk on the lead?
Walks well on the lead. You don’t know she’s there. She will take up the slack if she spots something like a fox or deer but doesn’t pull hard.
Has Lady Penelope met with other dogs?
Yes she’s not bothered. She met a 5 month old pup Jack Russel who jumped at her face. She wasn’t keen on him but not many dogs would be!! She gave a gentle growl and his owner collected him.
How is Lady Penelope with humans?
Loves human contact. She will wander over and politely lean her head into you for a stroke. She will stay there all day if you don’t stop.
Have you noticed if Lady Penelope is afraid of any particular things?
No not yet
