Welcome Betty to her new life in the UK. having lived too long as a young pup in a miserable Crete shelter, no walks, love, barely enough food, no outside area, just a dirty concrete prison cell.
Betty has spent a little time in a foster and is adapting so well, she is clean, loves her walks and fine with other dogs. She is still learning, so her new family will need to be prepared for the consistent work of introducing a dog to domestic life in the UK - basic training, toileting, walking on and off lead, getting used to noises and living in a home. The decision to adopt a should not be taken lightly - we have had dogs returned as people have not been fully prepared for the hard work that can come. If you invest time and energy into the advice we give you, Betty will adapt well. But please do not underestimate this can mean a few weeks of consistent work. With the right boundaries and guidance Betty will easily adjust and make a lovely addition to any home, but adopters need to be fully prepared. Our foster home has provided the feedback below: Dog's name: Betty Where does Betty sleep at night? Betty sleeps downstairs in the hall in her bed. She sleeps through the night without any disturbance and is as good as gold How is Betty with current pets? Betty is happy to be around our dog Basil, but is not dependent on him. She has learnt to follow his lead when it comes to meal times and knowing what to do. Is Betty clean indoors? Betty is completely clean indoors. She goes outside before bed in the evening around 10pm and is let out again at around 7am. Can Betty be left alone? Yes, Betty has been left for 3 hours and was absolutely fine. She stayed in her bed and was happy to see us when we returned with a waggy tail. She doesn’t pine, bark or chew anything. Is Betty out on walks? Yes, she is nervous on her walks and tends to be wary of noises such as cars driving past/bicycles. Initially she would back away but she is slowly learning that she is safe and now tends to just freeze on the spot when she sees a car approaching. She has managed a 30 minute walk without any problems. She also tends to walk a little behind you as she doesn’t like everyone walking behind her. How does Betty walk on the lead? She is less keen on a lead attached to her collar but is quite comfortable wearing a harness for walks. She is also fine wearing a coat. Sometimes she walks beautifully without encouragement but if she is nervous e.g. if she hears a loud noise, she will need a little verbal encouragement to keep walking. Has Betty met with other dogs? Betty is keen to meet all dogs, no matter their size or breed. She is happy to have a good sniff and be sniffed and is quite sociable. How is Betty with humans? Betty is initially nervous around people if they approach her. Initially she would back away when approached but this has improved and if they hold out a hand she will come up to them and sniff their hands and sometimes allow them to stroke her. She has progressed with this in leaps and bounds in the few days she has been with us, so I am confident that as she learns to trust, she will get more confident. If you pick her up, she is very happy to snuggle on your lap and be loved for several hours! Have you noticed if Betty is afraid of any particular things? Betty is generally nervous and wary. She doesn’t like it if you try and catch her and she is scared of loud noises such as noisy exhausts from motorbikes, kids on scooters and lawnmowers. She is getting more confident each day though as she gets used to the walks that we take, especially the school run which is full of noises and people. Any other useful information? Betty has met a cat on her walks and does not try and chase it. The cat has actually walked up to her and they had a sniff and then Betty just walked on. She eats well but is not food orientated. If nervous, she will not take treats from anyone. She is a very sweet little girl who just needs some TLC so that she can learn to trust people again and gradually she will become more confident. She has just started to give us waggy tails and excited dances each morning when we come downstairs, when we are dishing up dinner or when we get home which is so lovely to see. What is Betty ideal home: A calmer home with or without another dog. She is fine with cats. 25/03 |
