Meet Benji who has just arrived in the UK having been rescued from a terrible shelter in Crete.
Benji was so sad in the shelter, desperate to be free and get out and have some affection. As soon Benji got his freedom he changed from a. very shy boy who used to cower to a nearly confident boy, who enjoys lots of cuddles and is showing his playful side. Benji is clean indoors, non destructive and can be left alone. A very well behaved boy. Benji is fully vaccinated, microchipped and neutered. Benji is still learning to adapt to life in a domestic environment and to the new sites and sounds in his new country. His new family will need to continue with consistent exposure to new environments and lots of play dates and meetings with other dogs. Our foster home has provided the feedback below: Dog's Name: Benji Arrival date: 20th December 2022 Benji is a sweet, curious boy who loves humans and dogs alike. He has been with us for a week and is gaining in confidence each day. On his arrival he cowered away from human touch and would lie flat and freeze when worried. He will now happily approach people and loves a cuddle. Where does Benji sleep at night?: He sleeps through the night and now has the run of the house. He mostly sleeps downstairs on the settee but in the last couple of days he has come upstairs to sleep with one of my other dogs. How is Benji with other pets?: He is very friendly with my young male dog who has only recently been rescued from the same shelter. They play together indoors and on the walk although I think Benji would prefer a calmer companion as my dog is quite boisterous when playing. He is very respectful of my older female and doesn’t bother her. He is more than happy to share a bed, jump in the van with them and eat alongside them. He hasn’t shown any signs of resource guarding. Is he clean indoors?: Yes. Remarkably he has been completely clean and is quite particular about where he does his business. He saves his toilet for the walks and has yet to go in our garden. He tends to do a few long wees a day and still squats rather than cock his leg. Can he be left alone?: He has been left alone with my dogs for about 4 hours and was fine. Watching him on camera he settled quickly and slept most of the time. This was after a walk and food. Is Benji out on walks?: Yes. He has 3 walks a day and will happily allow us to put his harness and lead on him. He is walked first thing before breakfast, mid afternoon (about an hour) and last thing at night before bed at around 10/11pm. This is only a short toilet walk and he does normally go to both toilets then. We generally drive to the walk and he travels well. How does Benji walk on a lead?: We use a slip lead and an extendable lead attached to his harness. We remove the slip lead when in a safe area to give him more freedom and test his recall. He has been off lead but only in secure areas as we are still testing his recall. So far this has been good as he likes human reassurance and will readily return for a treat. However he can be distracted by other dogs and is super fast so we are cautious about where we let him off. He is curious and cries when he sees another dog or people. This stops once he has met them. He is generally very good on lead but does zig zag a bit and stays close to your feet. Has he met other dogs?: Yes lots of different dogs with varying energy levels which he generally matches. He is very polite and will happily walk alongside other dogs. How is Benji with humans?: He is now fairly confident with people once introduced when out on a walk or with visitors to the house. He visits our local dog friendly cafe and is happy to be made a fuss of. Have you noticed Benji is afraid of anything particular?: Mostly loud noises and sudden movements near to him. However he recovers quickly once reassured. Other useful info: Benji loves human affection. I would say that this surpasses his affection for other dogs. However he does enjoy playing and chasing other dogs and is happy in their company. I feel he has become less reliant on them as his confidence has grown. He is a delightful young dog and will make a fabulous companion. He may benefit from having another calm dog in the home to help him settle but not sure if it’s essential for him. |
