Poor Ava found herself and her 6 puppies dumped in a horrid shelter in Crete, no care for her. And to top off her horrors, they neutered her whilst her pups were a few weeks old. Feeding 6 pups, her body recovering, producing milk, then neutered, no pain meds and feeding 6 puppies in pain. Just horrendous act of horror.
Ava is a wonderful little lady who deserves a home with another dog who will want to play after Ava settles in for a few days. Ava wouldn’t like younger children but other dogs and lots of cuddles from her humans. Ava is a shy little character at first but warms up quickly and bonds strongly. Ava is fully vaccinated, microchipped and neutered. In the short time Ava has been in her foster home she has made great progress. When she first arrived to was timid and was scared of everyday noises. She is now coming out of her shell. She has learned to play and will allow strangers to pet her. Although she has developed well in her foster home, she still has a lot to learn, so her new family will need to be prepared for the consistent work of introducing a dog to domestic life in the UK - basic training, walking on and off lead, getting used to noises and living in a family home. Ava will be shy and need a family who will give her time to settle and trust you, once she trusts you she bonds deeply. Ava needs a secure garden and a family who will be careful with doors etc for the first 2 weeks until she bonds as she may be scared of the change initially. Our foster home has provided the feedback below: Dog's name: Ava Where does Ava sleep at night? Ava currently sleeps on our daughter's bed as they both enjoy it, but she can also sleep in her own bed on the floor in the bedroom. She just very much needs to be with the family at night and not left alone downstairs. She sleeps soundly through the night if she had a toilet trip to the garden just before bed time. How is Ava with current pets? After initially being quite frightened of our dogs, Ava has really warmed to them and loves to snuggle and play, particularly with our 1-year-old girlie. Her inner puppy has emerged and she now loves a game of chase around the garden. She's completely ignoring the cat and the chickens. Is Ava clean indoors? Yes. She is now completely clean. She does need to be let out every 3 hours though. Can Ava be left alone? Yes, we have left her for up to 2 hours with our two dogs and she was fine - no damage or accidents on our return. However, Ava is completely beside herself with excitement every time we return (she can bounce like a kangaroo!), so she is clearly quite anxious whilst we are gone. Leaving her at least for a little while every day will need to be part of her ongoing training so that she doesn't develop separation anxiety. Is Ava out on walks? Yes, Ava loves her walks! She was a little unsure initially, probably never really been walked before, but now she walks nicely, with her tail up, enjoying all the different smells and meeting all sorts of dogs and people. She is very happy when she sees her lead come out and is first to storm out the door as soon as it's open (she will do this with or without lead so close monitoring is essential or she'll run away!). She now has 2 x 45 minute walks every day with regular trips to the garden in between. How does Ava walk on the lead? Ava is walking on the lead very nicely. She is walking beside or slightly behind me most of the time, stopping occasionally to have a good sniff. Has Ava met with other dogs? Yes, she has met lots of other dogs and is happy to say hello as long as they approach calmly. Ava was a little afraid of new dogs when arrived, but now has realised they are fun and she adores playing and will snuggle with our dogs in the home. She really does prefer to have another dog in the home. How is Ava with humans? Ava loves people and is craving affection. Her ideal day would consist of snuggles, snuggles and more snuggles (with the odd walk thrown in). She is still a little shy with new people but getting braver every day. Ava is very happy to approach people in her own time, once she feels confident enough. She doesn't like overbearing people, being picked up or made to sit on people's laps (though she will quietly endure it if she has to). She much prefers to sit next to you and rest her head in your lap ... all in her own time. Have you noticed if Ava is afraid of any particular things? No, Ava is not scared of anything in particular. She's not bothered by traffic or household noises at all. Only new people and dogs can still scare her. She is fine with calm and gentle dogs and people, but she will run away from bouncy dogs or loud people. If she gets overwhelmed or scared, she will try to go and hide in her bed or, if there's no escape, she will just freeze on the spot. Any other useful information? Ava is the sweetest little dog and we have all fallen in love with her. When she arrived, she was very timid around us but now that she's settled in she is very happy to cuddle, play with our dogs or just peacefully snooze in one of the many dogs beds or on the sofa. She particularly loves to cuddle with our daughter. She loves her food and her walks and will be very easy to train - she has already learned to sit for her treats. I wouldn't recommend leaving any food unattended within her reach - she is greedy and will eat anything she can find (including the contents of the bin if in reach). Ava is just adorable and once fully settled will be a wonderful companion. She travels well in the car and has already learned to walk into her travel crate for our journeys. Ava would love to live in a calm family environment where she can get lots of affection without being crowded. She would love to live with another friendly, playful dog. A family where she can explore life in her own time and learn that the world is fun and humans can be kind. Ava will be a bit worried when she is moved to her forever home. It will take only a couple of days until she bonds and adapts but we do want adopters to be aware that she will be afraid for a few days, so will need to be kept extra secure until she settles. 30/01 |
