Meet our bigger girl Aretha - aka Frankie who recently arrived from Crete.
This wonderful girl was likely dumped on the streets as not mean enough as a guard dog. She looks the part but is a soft natured sweet girl. Poor girl was thrown into a shelter and to be forgotten if she had not got her ticket out with us. We knew when we met Aretha she was a big bundle of love and deserved her chance. Some may say she is not be the prettiest or smallest girl but her personality is just wonderful. Aretha is clean indoors, loves to play with other dogs and loves humans. She can be left on her own and travels well. She need a large dog experienced family, who will continue her training and boundaries. Read the full write up below. Frankie is a large girl so a family with large dog experience would be a benefit as she is a fab girl but can be strong if excited. She still is learning the rules, boundaries, she will learn fast and make a fun adventure buddy. Frankie is a clever girl and will be happiest on adventures, running, agility, brain games. She wants to be engaged and motivated by food. She will make a wonderful buddy to have fun with. Our foster home has provided the feedback below: Dogs name: Aretha - AKA Frankie Aretha was named in memory of Aretha Franklin - she is now affectionately known as Frankie. Where does Frankie sleep at night? Frankie is such a good girl, she goes out for her last toilet break before bed and then takes herself off to her bed in the lounge and we do not hear a peep until we get up. We go to bed early so usually 9.15pm until 6.30am. How is Frankie with current pets? Our 3 dogs are not playful, Frankie is desperate to play and persists. They tell he roff a she accepts it and walks a way. They have played for short periods but they are not keen. Is Frankie clean indoors?Yes, such a good clean girl, no messes at all, no fears of going outside light or dark. She likes the garden, will sit and sunbathe or have. An explore. Can Frankie be left alone? Yes, we have left her for 4 hours, same as night time, she takes herself to her bed in the lounge and sleeps until we return. We have cameras, she doesn’t pace or stir, just sleeps. How is Frankie out on walks? Frankie loves her walks and does have some prey drive. She likes to jump in the long grass like a kangaroo. Recall is not there and a family would need to really invest in training before she could be let off. I suspect once she gets recall she would go off, explore but come back. She likes to be part of the pack and not bolt away. She just gets distracted with all the smells and little creatures. We do not want her to chase wildlife so she is on a no pull harness on walks and when not on the street she is on an extendable lead to give her a bit more freedom. If just on a normal lead she will pull, she is strong and could use some training in this area also. Has Frankie met with other dogs? Yes, she was polite when introduced to our dogs, curious, playful. We have met a few dogs out, she likes to play. She can be a vocal girl in play, but it’s not mean, she is just a big goofy playful girl who likes to speak. She is bigger and can play quite bouncy, so owners would need to monitor play with smaller dogs. How is Frankie with humans? Frankie is such a sweet natured girl. She loves humans and having a cuddle. She will come and sit on your feet and roll for a belly tickle. She leans into you and looks deep into your eyes. A very loyal girl, acceptant of change and wants to be part of the pack. She can jump up when excited, so we have been working on this, a firm no and hand out and she knows not ok. Any new adopters would need to continue this and be consistent. She just wants affection, but not a good habit to encourage. Have you noticed if Frankie is afraid of any particular things? No, Frankie is a well adjusted girl, no fear of the hoover, loud noises, rain. Just easy going and her tail is always wagging. She walks fine on busy roads, high street. Any other useful information? Frankie is such a sweet natured girl. She loves her walks, she is clean and non destructive. She loves her food and is motivated to please with treats. She takes treats nicely and knows if she sits she may get a reward. Frankie enjoys sitting at a cafe, watching the world go by. She is a great pub dog. She is a fab running buddy and would love to go on adventures. Frankie is calm indoors, she has 2 walks a day and once walked with sleep, during the day she will sunbathe in the garden. Calm nature for sure. The bad traits that need working on, Frankie is still a puppy in her mind. She was confined to a shelter cage and missed so much. She is now loving her freedom and making up for lost time. But she needs to learn the ropes. We cannot expect her to know whats acceptable, sadly modern dog lives have to have rules, they cannot jump etc, we need them to return. So we ask adopters to be mindful that she just needs some positive guidance. She needs to learn no jumping up if excited, which she nearly over.. But just need to continue to say no if she lapses. Frankie need some recall, lead trying. She is good on the no pull lead, but means walks will be dull for her if she cannot explore. She is better in field areas as woodland areas are a temptation. But we have gone to woods and she just darts in and out a bit more which can be a pain with the extendable lead. After the life she had we want her to get the balance of fun and adventures with some good behaviour so she will get to explore more. She is a larger stronger girl, so a home who can manage a dog if she pulls and will have the time to invest in her training or seek some professional training guidance. Once she gets over a couple of basic things Frankie will just blossom. She is a sweet affectionate well behaved girl who is learning each day. She has a wonderful face who is eager to please. 31/8/23
