We should all be coming more aware of the effects of day-to-day living on global warming - glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising, cloud forests are dying, and wildlife cannot keep adapting to the rate of increase.
Here in the UK we are experiencing extreme weather conditions - hot and dry summers and record rainfalls causing flooding. It is becoming clearer every day that our need to support a growing population, our love for luxuries, fast pace living, technology and manufacturing and farming animals and animal feed has caused most of the past century's warming by releasing heat-trapping (greenhouse) gases, such as carbon dioxide, as we power our modern lives.
Most of us are oblivious to the damage being caused each day. But we feel it’s time to take a little responsibility for the side effects of enjoying modern conveniences and luxuries.
Each of us must bear some responsibility for reducing our greenhouse gas emissions - we can’t just wait for the government and industry to take corrective action. At Chimney Farm, we use transport to get the dogs to the UK, use transport to visit the countries we help, we buy items on Amazon and we use our vehicles. So we have decided to try and give back a little until more economical ways of travel and purchase are created, we will try and ‘pay’ for our greenhouse gas emissions and had considered using carbon offsetting.
Carbon offsetting, in general, means donating funds to organisations which help the environment by lowering or reducing carbon emissions. If sufficient funding is given to result in net zero carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere, it's referred to as “carbon neutral”.

Opinions are divided concerning the effectiveness of carbon offsetting. There are many thoughts on whether carbon offsetting is just a way for big business to continue to destroy the climate but ease their consciences buy giving money away. And upon researching we feel that yes this is a way of just making ourselves feel better but with no actual change.
This article Carbon Offsets 101: Why We Can’t Offset Our Way Out of the Climate Crisis by EcoWatch, makes an interesting reading about the shortcomings of carbon offsetting.
We had thought about donating to an organisation which offers carbon offsetting through planting trees but as opinions are so divided we have chosen an alternative.

We have decided that we should donate the funds we would have used for carbon offsetting to a reputable charity and let them use them to protect nature and their climate campaign. We have chosen the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds whose website describes their activities which relate to climate change:

We have calculated the cost quoted on-line to offset our carbon emissions and will donate those funds to RSPB and help fund change. We will update this page monthly to show to show our offset amounts so you can keep up to date with our progress.
