Should you adopt a second dog?
One of our adopters posted a request for advice on our Facebook Adopters page:

"I'd like to get advice on having a 2nd Chimney Farm dog....we got Alfie about 6 months ago and he is nearly a year old. He has grown to love us but he is very much a 'dog dog' - not that bothered about humans but LOVES other dogs. It seems mean to keep him in a home with no other dog friends so we are thinking of getting another. I just wondered what others experience was of this - we will obviously have to make sure they are a good match, but do you find it is double the work having 2 or half the work as they entertain each other?!
Thanks in advance"

One thing to note is that we do not agree with change over or pass over dogs, this is when a family have an older dog and want to have another dog so that if their older dog passes they are not left without a four legged friend. This is not always kind on current older dogs as they may not appreciate a young boisterous pup in their twilight years.
  • I adopted Elvis first(18 months ago) from chimney farm. He loves other dogs too,so decided to adopt another(Phoebe). They are great companions and I'm so glad I got her. You won't regret it!!! Xx
  • Do it. We got ceto last April and than Vida to keep her company in about June. Not really double the work as you already walk one. Ours love to play fight and adore each other. It also means my OH and I have once each to cuddle
  • I have just taken my third CF dog and not regretting it for a second yes it's more mess yes it's more training yes it's more poop but it's also more loves more fun and a lot more entertainment! !
  • We have 2 if our own dogs and also foster for Chimney so it’s often a house full! 2 dogs really isn’t much more work and it’s so lovely to see them playing together. If your not convinced about another full time member of the family how about fostering?
  • I would recommend it too. We have 2 and were warned against having siblings but they love each other. Play sleep and look after each other. It’s lovely ! X
  • I would definitely go get a dog friend. Chimney were excellent and allowed me to introduce my dog to the new dog to ensure that they got on and thankfully they did and are still very happy together.
  • I’m finding it no more work really than when I had one as they entertain each other when I’m doing jobs etc. My only issue is cuddles - I only have 2 hands and so when they all want cuddles at the same time someone has to have my arm stroking them instead. Do it. You’ll never regret it.
  • I would agree. Two isn’t really any more work that one. You’re going to take one a walk so another lead in the other hand isn’t a big difference. I would say the only stumbling block might be when you want to go on holiday? Paying to board two would be quite a lot more.
